The “Cracked Humans” Theme: This drawing is part of Wilson’s ongoing exploration of imagined, weathered faces. The visages evoke a sense of physical and psychological trauma, resembling ancient, mummified bog bodies or fragmented relics.
Visceral Texture: By combining unorthodox materials like industrial grout with traditional charcoal, chalk, and watercolour, Wilson builds a heavily encrusted, crumbling texture directly on the paper. The coarse grout mimics cracked stone or peeling skin, adding a physical depth that bridges the gap between 2D drawing and 3D sculpture.
Chiaroscuro & Colour Contrast: The heavy use of charcoal and black pigments creates a claustrophobic, deep shadow that consumes half of the face. This stark darkness is offset by a raw, blood-red and earthy watercolour background, emphasizing a state of distress, entrapment, or survival.
